Pearl Necklace is usually associated with elderly people rather than young and fashionable generation. But now the trend has changed since there is perceptible increase in the availability and accessibility of these pearls from freshwater. Let us see how a pearl is defined, how it is formed and what its major areas of classification are. Basically a pearl is a mass of calcium carbonate which is found under the multiple layers of a shell mollusk.
There are basically two kind of pearls cultured or farmed pearls and wild pearls. Where wild pearls are considered as valuable gemstone, the cultured pearls are less valued since they are extracted from the oyster shell specifically groomed for this purpose. These pearls have been frequently used on garments or crushed to manufacture medicine. These have also been used in paint making. The wild pearls are iridescent and they illuminate differently at different angles, whereas the farmed or cultured pearls glow uniformly at all angles. All kinds of shell mollusk produce some kind of pearls but all of them are not considered as gem. There are only two kinds which are known as bivalve or calms, which are considered as gemstones. As far as cultured pearls are concerned, Japan is to be considered to be one of the leading countries which are carrying out the business of pearl farming. These mussels have been farmed by Scotland and China as well.
In old times, Mary Queen of Scotland used a strand of pearls in 1550. Even before that these pearls have been used since ancient times for example sarcophagus of a Persian princess who died in 520 BC, is displayed in the Louvre in Paris. In Rome, only persons from royal background were allowed to wear pearls. In Greek language the word used for pearl meant “unique”. In Hindu religion pearl necklaces occupied are religious importance and they were worn by princess, as well as by nobility in wedding ceremony. In Christian religion it is believe that the Jesus Christ forbade his disciples not to cast pearls before swine.
Historically they have been valued much more as compared to present day and now they are even worn by middle class and upper middle class with jeans tops etc. Today it is fashionable to wear pearl necklaces which contain pearls of different sizes, shapes and colors including red, canary yellow and turquoise. These pearls are also used in pendant and are increasingly adopted by professional for an elegant look. Pearls are used in necklaces either as a main item or as an accentuating item. In recent days these necklaces have found so much importance that heads off states choose to present it to their valued friends e.g., the head of the most powerful state on earth that is U.S, Bill Clinton presented it to his intern Monica Lewinsky and she liked it so much that she kept it with her long after their relationship ended.
